Giving away wins to friends/family

Hi all
Just curious; if anyone gives comp wins to friends/family for Christmas/birthdays etc, do they pull a face and say 'oh, did you win it?'. It happens more and more to me, and often the prize is of a decent value. It makes me feel a bit sad like the value of the gift is made much less because I won it rather than saved for it, even though I spent many hours trying to win it?
A lot of my wins over the years I have given away to family and friends, basically handing them out as soon as I receive them, cos I like giving things that people will like (and I can only use SO much make up ). However, they seem to become less and less appreciative and more blase. So, this year, myself and my OH are putting the wins we won't use in a big (hopefully :rotfl:) box and thinking more carefully about what to do with them. A chap near me does weekly raffles for charity and I might donate some prizes here I think.
Just would be interested on people's thoughts whilst I'm sat here comping!

Hi Softpad,
We do the same as you, give what we dont want to family. Since retiring we have had to reduce the amount we spend on presents dramatically but they all know that if we win something that they would like we give it to them as an extra during the year. They love this idea and it is working out well. They have asked that any small items be put in a box and when the family gets together at Christmas can they have a "lucky dip". Don't know if this helps but this is what we do anyway.BIG THANKS TO ALL WHO POST THE COMPETITIONS0 -
Thanks and I do like the lucky dip ideaMAY THE ODDS BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOUR0

I give wins as presents - usually it's the silly ones that get an oh did you win this - dvds, books etc are gratefully received & my daughter adores the dress I won for her & gave at christmasproud gran to 4 lovely boys and one little girl0

I give mine to family as presents and they never comment or ask if I won them or not.
To be honest, some of the bigger prizes I have given to them are probably worth more than a present I would have bought for them!:TA big thanks to all who post and sprinkling lucky dust to all who enter :smileyhea0 -
I reckon if any one I gave a hard won prize to was blas! about it and thought less of me for winning it, then I for sure would never give them another prize, and I would make sure someone who wanted it would get it next time I won something.
just because it was free does not lessen the gift.it was the thought and efffort of trying to win it in the first place that makes it special, after all I only know one tractor nut and if it was for me I would not have spent the time entering for tractor stuff. so if by any chance I won some tractor stuff (like I did last year) then I would expect a thank you and no snotty comments about it being a lesser gift then if I had bought it. Also I would never have bought it so they would never have got it at all without the win, as in the tractor case the stuff would have cost more than £40 and the person involved is not a spend £40 on person, more of a £10 if that makes any sense:)
so I feel good for winning stuff and they hopefully feel good for receiving something they like and would never have got unless I had won it, this is for all the things I have given away not solely tractor stuff:)63 mortgage payments to go.
Zero wins 2016 😥0 -

I agree - some people think compers are lazy - gaining prizes for free. BUT they don't realise how many unpaid hours we spend trying to win or the effort we put into finding answers, creating rhymes, ditties, etc. I think many people class compers as 'unemployed and lazy people who sit all day in their pyjamas!':TA big thanks to all who post and sprinkling lucky dust to all who enter :smileyhea0 -
Some of my family members have said this and I am feeling the same as softpad. Or sometimes with big gifts I have expected them to call and say thank you but this hasnt happened....think some just take it for granted now. With any further wins, I will think first before just handing them out like I previously did! Thanks to all those fab compers who post:j:T0

I think if any of my family were like that then I'd seriously re-think getting them a present at all. People these days seem to be of the opinion that they're owed a great gift twice a year and feel unappreciative if it's not to their liking when really ANY gift should be thanked for and appreciated. I hand-make some of my gifts for Christmas because money is tight and they've always been well received (to my face, haha). I think whatever a gift costs (in money, time, effort etc) is a thing to be grateful for and people should stop acting so spoiled about it
/End rant
May you all have lots of luck, Emma xx0 -
I gave my mum and dad presents that i won for christmas. I'm living at home and their reply was 'Im glad you didn't spend lots of money' They were all gifts that they would like - not something they would never use!
I gave my parents the silent extractor fans I won... They were over the moon with them! Even though everyone else thought it was a 'naff' prize, it's something they needed as the old ones rattle all the time! Actually, come to think of it, mum mum and dad and boyfriend tend to get everything, as I can never win anything for myself!I love giving things and making people happy!
