We opened up our fireplace a month or so ago and after some cosmetic work and having it both swept and tested by a certified sweep we used it for the first time last night and all was well.

Put in a stove rather than a fireplace - much more efficient and cleaner too. And as you get that done, have the chimney flue lined with a stinless steel flue.
Faffing around with bricks and mortar will work in the short term but a decent job will last much longer. For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0 -
The sweep we used checked the bedrooms, built in wardrobes either side of the chimney breast and also our loft for smoke before he would say it was safe for us to get a fire going again in the fireplace.0
