I would tend to use The Highway rather than Commercial Road, if the it's busy you can turn down Wapping Lane and take first right and then pop back on by News International or even go around Wapping if really busy.
Assuming Lower Thames and Upper Thames St are quiet I would go along those the head North at Blackfriars Bridge along Farringdon St, left onto Calthorpe St straight onto Guilford Street, turn right at Russell Sq along Woburn Place turn left into Gordon Sq straight onto Torrington Place then turn right and then left onto Howland St keep going straght New Cavendish St until the end then turn right onto Marylebone High St then left onto Paddington St which takes you to Bake st
Alternatively you could use Tavistock Place.
I reckon I could do that in about 35 minutes, don't forget to use any bus lanes that are open.
That area of London is easier to navigate around if you avoid Euston Road and know your North and west and east directions.
Go back along Wigmore St / Mortimer St then down Tottenham Court Rd, Chenies St, down Gower St to the A40 turn left and follow it along Theobalds Road / Clerkenwell Road / Old St which will take you back onto the way the sat nav knows eg through Shoreditch
If you do go along Euston Road and it's busy you can always go around the top of Regents park.
It depends on the traffic as sometimes I would go south of the river.0 -

Yeah satnav took me round city road/euston road. Apart from being stuck in traffic. There are buslanes everywhere. The worst are the ones where you're supposed to turn left but the bus lane ends just 3 car lengths from the juction so you have to do a lane change right before the junction.
I thought the route you had in mind was to go past highbury & inslington and round prince albert road or something0 -
I'm not an expert on getting around London, but how about something like this for the second half of that trip - further along the river, then partway up The Mall and through Mayfair?

And there might be some free parking in Regents Park, if that's not too far to walk. I studied Streetview on Google Maps for a visit near there in May, but ended up just off the northeast of it, nearer to where I was going.0 -

That's not a bad route, they've been shutting the Blackfriars underpass on occassions at night. If they do and your on Lower Thames St you will be there a while.0 -
