MOST banks and CC companies seem to encourage you to let them know when you are going abroad.

Maybe it would have been a good idea to do this?

Right.

Not sure what to suggest then.

I did used to have an M&S credit card I mostly used at Christmas and I kept getting tripped up by the automated fraud monitoring.

My experience is that this makes no difference as to whether a card gets blocked. BUT, it might just cause the card to be unblocked again without your having to phone them first. It's as if somebody manually (or a clever computer) looks at the account and realises the suspicious transaction matches your recorded travel plan, and then unblocks it.
