Random phone call regarding old iva

Hi everyone,

I've posted on this board before and received great advice, so thought I'd share the rather strange phone call I had this afternoon with you if I may.

Firstly a short background- IVA done and dusted a few years ago, everything off my credit report etc.

Anyway I came home to find a message on my answer machine from J and A Davis stating that the call was regarding my old iva with Debt free Direct and that I may be due a refund of the vat from the charges. All I need to do is call them to confirm my address.

Needless to say, I will NOT be calling anyone to confirm anything, especially when the source is an unsolicited call to my land line number.

However I did a search on the company and I can see that they provide bailiff services. Could they be using this tactic in order to try and pin some old debt on me? I know I have no debts now- that's what the iva was for, however I don't want some bottom feeder debt collector hassling me again!

Anyway my question is, has anyone come across anything like this before?

Sorry I seem to have rambled on a bit! Thanks for reading if you've made it this far!
:)

  • ...Might be worth giving DFD a call to see if there is any validity to this claim.

Sounds suspect though as you say.

Keep your completion certificate nice and safe - you might need to send copies of it to any creditors that may, however unlikely, chase you.
  • I had my F&F settlement delayed due to an issue with HMRC and my IP and VAT issues. I dont think you would be entitled to anything as the VAT recovered by my IP was put straight back into my IVA, but my IVA was still not concluded at this time whereas your is concluded. There may be something in it. A call to the company couldnt hurt, especially if there maybe a little payback due??
  • Thank you both for your help.

I called DFD today and it seems that this is legit. Apparently they are confirming the details of everyone who may be entitled to some kind of refund of the VAT. The guy on the phone was really helpful, although a little non-committal as to whether there will actually be any refunds and when this may happen. However he said he would be 'in contact' if they are going to refund people.

I'm not going to hold my breath, but I''ll definitely be keeping my eyes on mse for any news on this in the future.

I'm just relieved that I will not have to deal with some debt collector after all!

Thanks again for your help. If anything does come of this down the line then I''ll be sure to update :)
  • Quick update for anyone searching for an answer to anything similar in the future...

Received a cheque through the post from DVD this weekend with a letter saying something about them passing on a tax refund. Not a huge amount but was a nice surprise anyway :)

Thanks again for the help x
  • Hi Wooandnads, thanks for the useful info, I too received the phone call & wasn't sure what was happening so now I know!

    All the best
