Steam Iron failure after 5 months

Bought Russell Hobbs steam iron from Littlewoods (catalogue) in August. Stopped working today. Fuse OK.
Rang Littlewoods. Sorry you have to ring Russell Hobbs.
Deep discussion. Our contract with you, not Russell Hobbs. Sale of Goods Act requires you to supply goods of Merchantable Quality. Failure after 5 months = not Merchantable Quality.
Total intransigence.
Next step?

Call Russell Hobbs?
Getting your iron fixed is probably more urgent than a small victory for your rights.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Willing to purchase cheap and cheerful iron to tide us over - cannot see Russell Hobbs sending replacement via return of post - unless you know different.

No one can know what they will do for you - you'll need to ring them and see what they say.0 -
Previous posts suggest around a week. Buying an iron to 'tide you over' while you wait for Littlewoods is cutting off your nose to spite your face in this case.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. Points taken. Need to ask Russell Hobbs tomorrow for their response. Not anticipating lightning response from them and the way ironing builds up in our house £8 on a no make Chinese made (aren't they all) iron from ASDA or Tesco still may have to be the way to go.
Appreciate comments from experienced consumers.

£4 can't go wrong there
But yes, contact Russell Hobs who will send a pre paid postbag or postage out to you, you send the item back, they assess it and will either refund or replace.
You can force littlewoods to do this on your behalf, and if they don't comply you can write a letter before action advising them you will be going legal on them, wait 14 days then file a small claims court and see if they fold there, if they refuse go to court and see if they appear, by this stage they should of folded or not sent anyone (because no lawyer can get out of this clear & cut case) and then receive your money within a month after that.
Phone or email russell hobs is by FAR the easier route, however I can understand the need to force littlewoods to follow the SoGA. Depends how much free time you have.0 -
Rang Russell Hobbs this morning. Listened to description of fault. Told me there was no telephone advice they could offer and to ring Little woods and ask them to refund or replace as it was less than 12 months old. Littlewoods have arranged to collect item tomorrow. Allow 21 days for them to inspect and if found to be our fault will be charged.0

Sorry to bump my own posting but this fits with the other poster with Customer Service problems about his computer.
The issue seems to be that there is no continuity. Your conversation with one advisor makes no difference to the next.
Last nights conversation was not about getting telephone support from Russell Hobbs. It was about sending it back to them. This mornings after the contact with Russell Hobbs was totally different. We have to parcel the iron up (and yes, the box has gone!) for collection.
21 days as they quote for "inspection" is ridiculous. Only wish they could arrange collection of three weeks worth of washing for ironing.
So the suggestion about the £3.99 steam iron from Currys looks like being taken up, if only our local one had it in stock!
