    Without doubt, this is the biggest con for years!

    Why on earth would you need a stick to walk with unless you have a disability?

    Does it really exercise parts of your body that other excercise doesn't? Of course not! Just go for a walk!

    Lets not forget, there is always someone will sell you something that you don't need!

    Overdramatic much? :rotfl:

    Poles like this are really meant for hiking, not a stroll on pavements down to the shops. Plus they come in handy for walking in icy conditions.

    But aside from this, people who are maybe a bit wobbly on their feet but don't want/need a traditional walking stick might use one of these.

  • my dad is 'able bodied' but has fallen twice in 7 days due to snow and ice. He would find this very useful as normal sticks just go onto the ice not into it, giving more balance.It would be great for his job as he is outdoors alot, so thank OP

    So centuries of walking sticks have been a complete con then? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walking_stick

    I personally just find them a hinderence others swear by them all a matter of choice. Some even choose to walk with two a bit like ski poles.
    I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

    • hike regularly for fitness and enjoyment;
    • walk distance on undulating terrain;
    • do hilly walks with steep ascents/ decent;
    • carry heavy backpacks;
    • have knee problems;
    • have weak ankles;
    • want the confidence of a hand rail;
    • want to develop upper body strength;
    • want to use the upper body to move faster …can all gain benefits from using trekking poles.

    I use poles for hiking. They help me with balance. Also I have damaged knees from previous injury, using poles takes away some of the shock to the knee. They also prevent me from further knee injury. Would not be without them. Its always handy to have a spare set of poles hanging around!
