What are UDP Packets and NTP Requests?

Can anyone tell me what they mean?

They appear frequently on the Netgear Router log. I think I have worked out that the UDP is propbably to do with online gaming (Call of Duty tye thing) but allarmingly the NTP request often shows when there shouldn't be anyone at home! Does that mean that someone else is accessing our router or is it something that would normally happen when all the computers in the house are switched off?

These are two lines from the log:-

Sat, 2007-04-28 16:38:51 - UDP Packet - Source:81.193.166.37,41170 Destination:80.44.230.178,50270 - [DOS]

Sat, 2007-04-28 22:21:48 - Send out NTP request to time-g.netgear.com

ntp is just the router getting the time, normally happens at switch on.

udp can be various things, but usually a ping.

Your router is protecting you, so I wouldn't worry about all the background noise.

If it's wireless, make sure it's encrypted to stop the neighbours using it.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Why not visit time-g.netgear.com for yourself? Your router is synchronising it's date/time while you are out.
