It's now against French law to have speed warnings in your satnav, all the companies have deleted them (the French ones) It may be worth buying second hand if speed warnings are important. They would still be illegal, but unlikely to be checked.
But don't update the maps as that deletes speed cam warnings
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !
  • Tomtom XXL 5" Classic Western Europe. Yes this is good but there is a lot on there and takes a while to meditate when first switched on.Usually ok on the road though. We have never loaded any extras on it though eg campsites dpwnloads etc whether it might be a disaster. Someone else might have done it succesfully though.

I recently bought my first ever TomTom and I'm none too impressed with it actually.

Yes, the maps are more accurate but the Navman I had previous to it was better in every other way.

Thanks again people. Will look into NavFree, that looks quite a good option. And yes, getting a paper road map certainly won't hurt!
TomTom Start still looks like one of the better proper satnav options, so I'll keep my eyes open for a good deal there too.

    Cheers.

    I just remembered.
NavFree is 100% able to operate without a data connection EXCEPT using the google maps search.

i.e. you can enter a postcode or street etc. but not search for Viviennes B&B. (Something I often do using it in the UK)

Although this might not sound much remember French postcodes are a lot bigger than ours so punching in just the postcode will not get you that close to an actual address.
