There were insufficient cleared funds available to pay the DD.

In short, they haven't paid it.

Depending on the provider/account type you may be charged.

If it wasn't paid I'd expect to see some charge for this, not just a "returned direct debit". Banks usually call it 'bounced' or 'unpaid'.

Was it a debit or a credit transaction?
  • Direct debit - phone bill
  • So why on earth do First Direct persist in charging a monstrous £25 for a returned DD when most other banks charge far less?

They charge nothing if the returned payment is less than £10.
They charge £10 if the returned payment is between £10 and £25.
They charge £25 if the returned payment is more than £25.

Perhaps they have this charging structure to maximize profits or perhaps they have it to discourage customers from spending money they don't have.
Either way it's an optional charge. Run your account properly and you don't pay it.
