What does returned direct debit mean on my bank statement? Is it that i havent paid the direct debit?

There were insufficient cleared funds available to pay the DD.
In short, they haven't paid it.
Depending on the provider/account type you may be charged.0 -

They charge nothing if the returned payment is less than £10.
They charge £10 if the returned payment is between £10 and £25.
They charge £25 if the returned payment is more than £25.
Perhaps they have this charging structure to maximize profits or perhaps they have it to discourage customers from spending money they don't have.
Either way it's an optional charge. Run your account properly and you don't pay it.0
