Is that right tax as % of GDP was very similar to now and basic rate income tax was 35%.

I don't have the numbers to hand but if you look at Govt spending in the 50s/60s I would guesstimate that it was closer to 1/3rd GDP than half.

Ultimately Govt spending and total tax levels have to end up about the same otherwise you end up like Greece.

Higher sales tax (VAT) disproportionately hits the poor.

I accept that but I'm not sure the overall tax burden on the low paid is higher than it was in the 60/70s.

Tax as % of GDP between 1963 and 1970 varied between 31.2% and 37% compared to about 36% now.

I agree with the others, 25K joint income is actually quite poor for the SE. I wouldn't even consider it that great in my own North East.

I too can't believe someone is calling a £12.5k joint income decent in the South of East.

£6.25k joint income a year is rubbish! A pittance in the South East.

  • Lets not get carried away with student 'debt' its a tax for getting a better education which should lead to a better job. As many on here already know payment for such 'debt' would be less than the average mobile phone bill for those on the average wage.

Just feeling sorry for our youth will just end up making them feel like the victims (as what has occurred with Liverpool folk). We need to show them that a bit more hard work and productivity might just get them a decent living.

Indeed. A lot are already deciding it seems that a three year beano poncing about doing Media Studies at the University of Basingstoke is not such an attractive proposition when it isn't someone else paying.

    For a 26000 wage earner 35% (graduate new scheme 37%), 40000 35% (graduate 40%). 60000 38% (44%) "fag packet" roughly ex pension.
