insurance company took 6 years off no claims for one accident.

My car is insured by a large insurance company ( not sure if I am allowed to name them). I had 9 years no claims at the start of the year. I had an accident which was my fault and when they sent my renewal details they said I had only 3 years. I e mailed them and they said that this was because they cap no claims at 5 years. I am really annoyed about this. Will other companies also say I have only 3 years or will they look at my 9 years and just take off 3. Can I do anything about this?
Please help, I need to sort this out before I renew as my premiums will double with only 3 years NCD.
thanks

companys normaly these days do people at 5 max, no many look beyond this. have you got the other years no claims certs?
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

You now have 3 years NCD.

(You will see how your insurer reduces your NCD after one claim within the policy document)

As already advised above, this is the norm. If you have a claim free year next year and get up to 4 years NCD then consider protecting it from then on!

    Hi,

I think if you went to another company you would have no no claims as you've had a claim?

I thought it was only reduced by 2 years for a claim.
  • How is this fair. I spend 9 years building up my non claims, driving carefully then one small accident in very poor road conditions and I lose 6 years.
It's my husbands car and I insured in under my name this year. Can I use his no claims from last year or does he lose it if he isn't continuously insured.

He can sign it over to you permanently.

His NCD will be valid for two years (sometimes 3). He could probably take out the cover next year - assuming he is not using it on another car.

(ps Get protected NCD next year)

You lose 2 years for one claim! Nearly every insurer uses 5 as the max when you lose NCD after a claim.

It is all set out in your policy.

(If you had 50 years NCD, and it was unprotected you'd be in the same boat - 3 years at renewal)

His NCD should last 2 years from when it was last used.

You cannot use it as it is (your insurer may allow him to transfer it to you), or he could insure the car and have you as a named driver on the policy.
