Better off working?

I ask this on behalf of someone who i know.

She is a lone parent in private rented accommodation with a 5 year old child, and works 6.25 hours per week at £6.25/hr.

She has been offered a 2nd job working 12.5 hours per week at £6.24/hr.

For this 2nd job she will have to pay child care fees of £42.50 per week.

The question is, will she be better off working than on benefits.

Before I went back to work I phoned this:

    The Gingerbread Single Parent Helpline.
    Open:

    Mondays: 10am to 6pm
    Tuesdays/Thursdays/Fridays: 10am to 4pm
    Wednesdays: 10am-1pm and 5pm-7pm.
Phone today for free, on 0808 802 0925.

We can give you the information you need on:
    • Child maintenance
    • Contact
    • Employment
    • Education
    • Welfare benefits and tax credits
    • Housing
    • Debt.

It was clear and really helpful and I could ask as many questions as I wanted.
I never realized how much personal info is out there that can be used and abused to suit every purpose.

Yes she should be better off as she'd get WTC plus the childcare element. Check the turn2us calculator https://www.turn2us.entitledto.co.uk/entitlementcalculator.aspx
