Im assuming you have Windows XP, and here are some things to check....
1. Go into Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio. Click the Sounds tab, then on one of the sounds with a speaker beside it (i.e. "Critical stop") and click the Play Button. do you hear anything?
2. Check your soundcard isn't muted from the Sounds and Audio control panel. Also check that the volume is up.
3. Check cable from PC to speakers. It'll be a 3.5mm jack, so you could plug it into another device like an MP3 player to check the speakers are working.
Let us know how you get on.Throwing acid is bad.... in some peoples eyes...0 -

Are all the sound drivers working correctly ?? You can check this by going into Control Panel..System..Hardware..Device Manager and clicking on the "+" sign on the Sound, Video and Game Controllers.
Make sure they aren't any yellow question marks in there.0
