Moved House- Can i call the house a name?

Hi, i have now moved and want to call my house a name (as well as the number) Do I have to inform the Post Office or Royal Mail or do you simply start putting it on your change of address notes etc?

If you want a name as well as a number you can just go ahead and show both on your address cards.

If you want to discard the number and just have a name you need to make a case to Royal Mail and get their agreement. You would have to have a persuasive arguement that mail is getting lost at the moment. Even then they may give you a more appropriate number rather than agree to a name.

    Mine's called Bob.
My neighbours called theirs Rover but I think that would work better as a dog's name.

    classic.

In all seriousness, as long as the number is retained, a name can be used without a problem as far as I am aware. Just make sure that you don't choose a name that one of your neighbours uses - you'll end up confusing the posties, and losing post!

Why on earth do you want to call it a name?

  • Our house is number 2b - post often goes to 26 or 28 so we named the house 'Hamlet' - works well and get 99% of our post now!

    Very good! ;)

You might find a few difficulties with Royal Mail - our house has a name (albeit a 200 year old one!), but we still got a bit of grief when we first bought it as it hadn't been occupied for 20 years and it seemed to have got 'lost' over that period of time. Everything's sorted now though - just keep on at them, and you may have to hassle the utilities etc. seperately.
    Good luck!

  • A little bit off your subject but.... I have a house name rather than a number and it is a pain in the bum!

If you order things of the internet there is such hassle as often the address is unknown. Utilities and companys computers dont always recognise the address.

The house isn't new - anything but!

I would always keep the number :)
