It depends what you want, home cinema use or business use? both ways of useing them require different characteristics.
Business use resolution doesnt really matter much so a 1024x768 is acceptable, brightness normally does matter, the brighter it is the less dark a room needs to be for the image to be seen up to 1000 lumens are est used in dark rooms 1000-2000 is about the norm and not too expensive. 2000 lumens and up you can use them in most conditions more is better but as a result the prices go up.
Home use, you tend to have the room reasonably dark anyway so brightness doesnt matter as much but you should look for good brightness. Contrast ratio is important 2000:1 is entry level and you may find blacks are displayed as greys, getting up to 5000:1 is better for black blacks but the downside is they get more expensive the higher you go. Another thing is the resolution, this makes a difference in the quality of the image you can get standard screens 3:4 (square tv resolution) or 16:9 (widescreen) HD projectors displaying a HD image the resolution of these is 720x1280 (720p) or 1080x1920 (1080p) you can also buy a 1280x768 which will display to the 720p standard but also be able to display a 3:4 image.
You can get standard resolution projectors for not alot of money now but is it really worth buying old technology?
so what do you buy? it all depends on your budget 1080p projectors are the highest resolution available and they cost a small fortune. you need to get a budget then come up witht he best projector that fits with in it.
Don't forget you can get away with a lower brightness and contrast ratio by buying a better more relective screen.0 -

I have one at work made by BENQ, can't remember the model at the moment(just woke up
). It's a little cracker, I use it for web surfing, displaying gaming movies and watching DVD's.
I have been running it for roughly 10-11 hours a day, 7 day's a week for nearly a year and it has been absolutely faultless. I will post the model details when I get to work."Gort, klaatu barada nikto"

I can highly recommend the service from CD WOW (http://www.avwow.com/), as they were very helpful and provided excellent service when I purchased an Optoma projector for my church. They are very happy to provide advice over the phone and even have a freephone number.0

Neil I've just set up a home cinema and invested in this projector. It's fantastic and far better picture quality than I ever thought I'd get. In addition the service and advice from the store is first class....can not recommend them highly enough.
