    many thanks everyone. I have now removed zonealarm and avast and installed MSE.

    will this also give firewall and malaware protection?

    you're now at the mercy of windows update, with all it's idiosyncracies.

    check windows firewall is on, it's not part of mse (or the free avast)

    don't think i've seen a test where mse beats avast in detection yet.
