Petrol for work

Hi

I've just got a new job as a community nurse and what I didn't take into account was my petrol costs! They will be payed a month in arrears.

Can anyone suggest the best ways to minimise the outlay, or use loyalty points etc. to save in other ways?

Thanks

Tris

if you don't have the money up front, how about paying for the petrol on a credit card and paying it off every month when you get your expenses back. You need to be strict though otherwise you will pay interest.

If you struggle to get a credit card, just go for one of the poor credit ones (vanquis , luma). Interest rate will be high but it won't be an issue if you clear the balance every month

Credit card - and if you have a good credit rating get one that has some sort of loyality scheme attached - tesco clubcard credit card, amazon card etc.

    Thanks Lazer & Rob

My boyfriend may be able to get one but our credit ratings are pretty low. Is there a card anyone can recommend?

Vanquis is specifically for people with a poor credit record. Interest rates are horrific but if you discipline yourself and pay the balance in full as soon as you get your expenses, this won't be an issue. You'll start with a low limit, usually £250, but this will rise if you use the card correctly.

The Santander 123 credit card pays 3% cash back on petrol on up to £300 of petrol per month so you get up to £9 a month back. But I don't know how they credit score you and there is a £2 a month fee, but they were waiving this for the first year when I got it.

My boyfriend is getting rejected. I'm worried we don't have time to build up his credit rating. I'm on a DMP so presumably there's no way I'd get accepted?

Capital One have several 'credit builder' and low/medium credit rating based cards.

who are you on a DMP with? check that they have no problem with you taking on a card. It's not a new debt as you are clearing it each month with expenses, but it is a new account
