Probably some spam has been sent using your email address as the sender. Doesn't mean your account has been hacked, but change your password anyway.
Also do a full scan on your system with something like Malewarebytes to check for anything nasty.

If the messages are in your sent items then it is either malware or something has got access to your account. Scanning and changing the password should help with these.

if you only use your ipad to get online, that alone has not been hacked, but your account probably has been comprised. Change your password to one that isn't easy to guess, and don't share it with anyone.

If however you access your mail on other computers, those should be scanned before you access anything which requires log in details.

You can use your ipad to change your password for your mail. But also worth while changing log in details of other kinds, like other infor that can be used to reset your password.

iPads don't need any other antivirus software/apps and are not susceptible to viruses. As far as I am aware you can't scan your iPad.

iOS can and has had malware in the past.
I'm not aware of any of the iPAD but it doesn't mean it can't happen.

    Anyway back to the OP.

Make sure you also check / change your security questions for password resets.
Also check your e-mail doesn't have any new "forwarders" that would allow someone to see what you are up to (in case your e-mail has been done over).

Have you any auto responders set on your email account as it could be a simple as you have sent an email to an AOL email address and its getting into a loop, so the original email was recieved by AOL and unknow and bounced back to you so you autorespond back to the AOL address, who sends it back and so on.

@OP, as the others have said, you AOL account has had unauthorised access.

As well as changing your AOL password, I would also recommend changing passwords for any other sites that you might have logged into on the same device, in case you have used a machine with a keylogger installed.
