TY upstairs - no aerial - wireless streaming?

Options
I dont want to split the present aerial, Idon't want to run leads through walls/ceilings and any of that nonsense.
We want to trial having a TV upstairs so borrowed a flat screen 32", nothing fancy and certainly not "smart".

I also don't want to have my laptop and a 5m HDMI trailing across the bedroom.

Is there a mechanism for getting TV signal to it streaming wirelessley or via bluetooth or the like?

Thank you in advance for your answers.

  • If you are in a strong signal area you could try an indoor aerial.

What cables do you have access to in the bedroom?

If you are going to have a smart tv, then you could try the ethernet over power units, basically a cable from the router to a unit that plugs into a mains socket, this transmits the data over the mains cable, and you plug its partner in where you want the internet. This would obviously aslo work on your laptop.

    This is an example, http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/ON-NETWORKS-PL200-199UKS-200Mbps-Ethernet-Powerline-Adapter-Kit-18781472-pdt.html?srcid=11026

There's quite a few other brands and some also act as a wireless router.

  • Hi,

do a google for 'AV sender', I use one from main telly to kitchen, not too far, you would need to check distance range.

If you have an Argos near you, you could get one there and try it, if not suitable you will get a refund.

  • Can't see any reason why any of those would not work, has to be worth a go at least, though a good idea to stick with buying one from somewhere it is easy to send it back to if it does not. Similar to Apple TV at first glance, and that apparently works.

Hmm well most of the Android TV boxes have been universally panned by hundreds of reviews, at best scoring 3.5/5 on Amazon.

I may even have to get a raspberry PI, while incredibly cheap, the real cost also includes an SD card with OS, plus leads, a keyboard and mouse etc it soon adds up to much more than the original £26 purchase cost..

  • You don't have to have a keyboard and mouse to use the Raspberry Pi and XMBC - as long as you have a smart phone or tablet lying around(?!). I use the Android remote control app Yatse.

You only need a 4gb SD card and they can be had for a few quid these days, installing the OS is relatively easy to do with the Raspbmc installer but you do need an SD card reader and PC.

It works well when it works but some of the add ons (eg for 4OD) aren't currently working. It's all a bit piecemeal but for the price I was happy.
