Whats better an ipad mini or an android tablet (not sure which ones are good)
Alot of games on the play store seem to be free but on the ipad are charagable)
I'm not a techie person and i'm totally lost. please help

No difference for 11 year old (unless he is tech minded and likes to tinker with computers, create content etc? - then definitely android. it offers endless possibilities and there is a huge online community of enthusiasts, developers, countless modifications, tweaks, shells etc. And it's all legal, whereas Ipad system is locked and doesn't allow any frivolity)
If it's just for munching content (browsing, games, movies, books) then it doesn't matter which one you choose (re android I'd suggest a known brand over something unknown due to the latter often having software bugs and generally being sluggish)
You'll save quite a lot with choosing android tablet over ipad though
My friends' 10 year old got Kindle HD for Xmas and loves it0 -
In terms of what both types will do, there is not a lot of difference. In terms of price you can save a lot of money with Android. I don't know how sensible your 11 year old is, but an expensive bit of electronics is likely to get broken/swapped/lost/stolen, so I would always go for cheaper.0

There are equal amounts of free and paid apps for both Android tablets and Ipads. I have both and agree for an 11 year old I would buy an Android. Have you considered a full size tablet rather than a mini? I bought a mini at Xmas and returned it. It was just to small, I got headaches straining to read the small txt and typing on a mini keyboard was a pain. I would not want to do school work on a mini. I chose a Nexus 10 Android and am happy with it.0

If the lad wants a plaything then by all means buy a tablet like an ipad or Nexus 7. If however the machine is for schoolwork then he needs a laptop/desktop depending on preference.
Tablets for play laptops for work.
There are a new bread of hybrid devices like the Microsoft Surface coming along that combine the best features of both butr they are expensive atm. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
