TP-LINK Repeater Setup

Hi

I bought a TL-WR702N to act as a repeater as the signal in the kitchen / dining room area can be weak.

So, got it out of the box and plugged it in to the power and conneccted to it by wifi from my laptop ready to configure it as a repeater but..... after I have logged in to the admin screens I can click on a couple of options, or start the wizard setup process but it seems to time outl

The section of the admin screen which refreshes when clicking on the different options display a 'Connection has been reset' page. I am then unable to connect to the Admin page if I re-enter the URL (192.1698.0.254); 254 is the correct IP for this device.

I've tried rebooting and resetting but I get the same problem, i.e. able to connect / login to the admin pages but then after a little while the connection reset message.

On the box its got a bix sticker saying.... "For CABLE Connection' but, as I'm only using it as a repeater, i.e. not an ADSL modem I believed that this would be fine.

Anyone any ideas why this happens, and more importantly what I need to do?

Can be set to router mode or client mode rather than AP mode

Aerostar / hasbeen.... thanks for the reply's but, I understand what steps I need to undertake to change the router in to a repeater but I don't get the chance to complete the actions because after a short period of time the main page in the admin screen refreshes with 'Connection has been reset'.

Is there a setting I need to quickly change so as to stop this from happening, i.e. do I need to enable DHCP (or something)?

  • Connect it to your laptop with an ethernet patch cable to do the initial set up.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that but I couldn't get any admin page to display on 192.168.0.254.

I've had a number of normal ADSL/routers in the past and never had these types of problems.

    Any suggestions?

Is access by a browser and the 'home' page the only way to connect?

Did you change your computers IP address ? as per the instructions, I think you are missing this operation, "X" to be any number from 1-253

    Preparation
    • Make sure the Main Router is on the Internet and you got the necessary Information of it as above.
    • Since the default mode of TL-WR700N/TL-WR702N is AP, the DHCP function on them is disabled by default. We have to manually assign an IP address as 192.168.0.X to the computer to match the default IP address (192.168.0.254) of the Repeater. Please click here for detailed instruction.

aerostar...... many thanks for your patience.

Not sure if I just read the instructions and thought they were for if you wanted to have fixed IP addresses (which I don't).

You MUST give your computer its own IP address to talk to the TP for setting up, and you must stop your wireless connecting to your modem. After you have fixed your TP you can return to previous auto setting.

By default if no network is connected Windows issues a IP address beginning 169.x.x.x, your TP has address of 192 etc, the two will therefore not talk to each other.

  • If you have 2 ethernet patch cables connect your laptop to the router with one nad the TP-Link to the router with the other.

You should be able to configure the TP-Link that way.
