I want to design my garden but dont know how

Hi, i have quite a large garden 0,5acre and would like it done/landscaped in the spring. I am not sure how to get started with the design etc. Are there any online tools anyone knows off that i can start with? Thank you

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. I think the first job is to measure up, using triangulation if necessary so that your scale plan is accurate.

Others on here will probably want to know how long you've had the garden, as familiarity with what it does through the seasons will normally inform planning.

Also...what you use it for. Is it a family garden for young children and adults, or older kids, or no kids? Is it a garden you want to entertain in ...do you need a larger area of terrace/patio/gravel garden for chairs to eat at and mingle on with drinks, or just room for the family to sit at mismatched chairs enjoying it.

Do you want growing space for fruit and vegetables?

Do you like relaxed styles? (cottage gardens at their most traditional, lavender growing through gravel paths in medittereanean stle ones) or Formal ones? ( Cottage planting in borders more arranged, symmetry, more structured colour planning)

What plants are 'musts' for you? What are you lacking that you want (interest, privacy, colour, seating areas etc etc ) ?

I am planning and planting my first entire garden ATM, and it's been daunting, despite grand plans and enthusiasm! I have broken the immediate area down into five main areas....and started work on three of those areas, but the real work comes this spring when I aim to get the real bones of structure into the first area, which is to have parterres or knots of herbs....but the drawing goes from simple modern squares on an angle with edgeing plants to call the tradtion to mind to a more traditional shape and I think I will change my mind a couple of more times in the next few weeks!

Good luck...remember it's meant to be a fun hobby!

Some adult education colleges do garden design courses over a weekend.
