Credit card refund problems

I have a Barclaycard with £54 credit from when I cleared the balance with a transfer.

I have written to them twice and sent two more faxes to their complaints department and I am still awaiting the refund of the monies.

In my first complaint I provided details so that a refund could be made to my bank account however the reply I got answered the questions I had raised but refused to refund unless I called then as they needed to 'verify my identity'.

The second complaint was in response to the first letter and I advised them that a cheque would be OK but I also questioned why they were happy to discuss my account in full yet couldn't accept the bank details given in the same letter because they couldn't 'verify they were mine'.

Since I sent the second complaint I have no response at - its been 2 or 3 weeks now. What is the best way to escalate the issue - do I try and contact the chief executives dept (worked with a 3 mobile complaint I had) or can the ombudsman deal with these queries ?
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Why not call them ? If you verify your details they'll probably refund you.

The timescale for complaints is usually 8 weeks before you would take it to the FOS.

Why not ring and talk to them... Or call into a branch with suitable ID.

As you have started a complaint. they have 8 weeks to resolve before you can go to FOS.
They also do not have to respond to your 2nd letter untill the end of the 8 weeks.
Could be they are still looking into the issue.

Also you should ask a Admin to move this to Credit Card section.

As far as I am aware, it's normal to issue a cheque as that will be in the name (and sent to the address) of the cardholder. It isn't possible to verify who bank account details belong to. So it's not at all unusual to seek verification before transferring money.

I don't think they are being unreasonable.
