Plaster/ Paint Problem

I recently purchased a new house which needed total renovation in the bathroom, we stripped it all out, then pva'd the bare brick, placed some plasterboard on the wall, pva'd the wall and finally had plaster put on (skimmed)

we then left it a week (which we know isn't enough) and my boyfriends step dad went and painted the wall with neat Glidden Vinyl Matt (NIGHTMARE!) without watering it down, which acts as a sealant.

this was done around 3 weeks ago, and i went and bought some Dulux ' Maraschino Mocha 5' which is meant to come out a beige colour, however when placed on the wall, it comes out lilac :(

I'm absolutely devastated as i have been told of all the problems we are going to have now.

but would really like some advice on how to sort it in a cost efficient way.

I've looked on google but it seems everyone knows to use contract matt, but i guess you live and learn.

Please help me!!!!
Had a few nice comping wins this year, still aiming for something big though, maybe one day eh! :p

As an aside, did you use a tester pot of the Dulux colour? Put some on a piece of white cardboard. I tried a tester of one of their Mocha colours when I wanted a beige for our bathroom. It was much more lilac than beige!
  • we saw the colour on them pieces of card you get, i did take the paint back to the shop, she painted it on a piece of paper and it came out the colour i wanted, however when painting it on our plastered wall (with the white vinyl matt on) it came out lilac!!!! :S i'm so confused

have you done the whole room yet? you get different reflections from window light , ceiling lighting which can affect the colour on the wall

whilst painting bare plaster with neat paint isn't ideal , it' not the end of the world .

Put some on a piece of paper at home. Paint colours look completely different in our house to in B&Q. The light is so different. Always use a tester pot. I use them on pieces of board rather than the wall so I can move them around the room, see in different lights etc.

The colour chart cards are never the same.

If, after you've tried the paint on a different surface at home, it still looks different when placed in the bathroom, then there's something odd going on. But as the previous poster said painting plaster with white matt should be OK if it's dried OK.

I always buy Dulux paint but couldn't find a nice beige at all. They were all lilac or grey. Ended up with B&Q own make! (Only room with it)
  • The Colour should come out like this:

the lady in the shop, painted the paint on a piece of paper, it definitely isn't the light as we've tried elsewhere, only in the bathroom though, but the colour it comes out, its like this:

so i don't really understand where the pigments are coming from to turn it purple?
would it be the plaster, even though we've painted it white?

finally, how would i go about getting the colour back to normal?
painting the wall again with watered down emulsion? maybe 3 or 4 times, then finally trying with the paint?

I don't know about the colour issue but painting the wall as he has done is a problem, especially in a bathroom where you're going to get condensation.

I think you'll need to remove the paint. You'll probably find that if you loosen a bit, it will start to peel away like wallpaper.

Then use diluted matt paint for a couple of coats - the plaster will suck this into itself and seal the wall properly.

The colour the paint has come out is nothing to do with the wall.I've tested that paint before and it has purple undertones,it has red undertones that can take on purple looks

    Think about the name...

I ended up using a different colour in my old house and that had a lilac tone too.

    It's NOT the walls

I found the same with all of their mochas too!Even mellow mocha had purple hints..

OP if you want the beigey colour have you looked at colours like Egyptian cotton? It' s a slightly greyed down beige that doesn't have red or purple tones!

It's the only ' beige' I' ll have in my house and is contained to the kitchen and bathroom but the colour is right lol

For what it's worth, never take the colour online as the colour it should be and remember dulux mocha colours always seem to have a purple taupe colour rather than ' beige'..used to be like that on cards too.It will also look different when dry

That was it! Mellow Mocha was the one I tried that was lilacy. Really odd. On their colour charts it's beige and you think mocha... coffee... You don't expect purple!

We have dark brown floor tiles in our bathroom and mid-brown wall tiles. I ended up with B&Q Kitchen and Bathroom paint in Ivory as it toned really well with the tiles and was quite warm.

Going off-topic but the other Dulux colour I've been disappointed with was Natural Calico, which everyone goes on about as being really popular these days (Magnolia for the 21st century). I found it very cold, almost grey in its tone. Could have been the light but I tested it for use in one of our south-facing rooms which is bathed in sunlight so most colours look warm in it.

OP - get some tester pots for colours you like and put them on the wall or on pieces of board in your bathroom. Colours look very different depending on the natural light in the room and the lighting you have. Check how the testers look at different times of day. We have the same paint colour in two rooms, one north-facing and one south, and you wouldn't think it was the same colour.

I tested natural calico in my kitchen because I heard it was greyed(most of my house is in polished pebble- very light grey and lovely, but as I can't be bothered to reptile the kitchen and bathroom and I had to go with greige in there lol),but yuck! It's like a grey beige mauve combination!!!!
