moisture traps for window sills

In the winter months the bottom of my windows get condensation and the window sills often get little pools of water collecting on them. I thought about getting some moisture traps to stand on the sills during the cold months, but I wonder if there's a cheaper OS option? I see the moisture traps in Lakeland are about a fiver each, and I'm guessing each sill would need one or two..

I think I read somewhere that a bowl of salt placed on the window sill will absorb moisture, - has anyone found this to work?

    Hi ya,

I know my local 99p store sells the moisture crystals and traps , so if you have one nearby it might be worth you popping in .
I've never used them , so am not sure how well they work ... They are one of those things that i always say i will buy next time i pop in , but never seem to get around to it !

You can buy big refil bags of the crystals in The Range for around £3.00. Much more MSE than buying a new trap each time it's full.

I used to fold teatowels onto the metal window sills of my prefab each evening, and then dry them out on the line in the morning. I'd have gone through miles of loo roll.

It was great living in a prefab when I was first married , but, my goodness, it ran with condensation! (and no, I'm not 90 ;)).

I get through about half a loo roll each morning wiping up all the water. Not good for the rainforest..:o

I have got a 99p store nearby, perhaps I will look in there, thanks :)

I've not heard of The Range before, will google it.

wow maybe single glazing was the thing to have, and mine doesn't get changed on a daily basis either as it doesn't need to be

  • hi we had this prob last year until landlord changed windows! I did find that salt helped: just a small open pot line the bottom with salt and change once it gets wet. I bought a cheap table salt from aldis. 34p if i remember rightly. good luck.

If there is still excess wipe down with t towel or old rags then leave t towel in the washer if you leave out the moisture will just absorb back into the air and youll be back to square one!

The funny thing is it's quite a new building and the windows are double-glazed and look to be quite good quality. I'm quite close to the sea, perhaps that's what's causing it..
