Office 2007 dumb question from technomoron

There's probably a very simple answer to this and I apologise if the question appears stupid but that's the state of my computing knowledge!
My wife recently got a home user Office 2007 suite through her work (NHS) and asked me to install it. No problem putting it on the laptop but when I tried to install it on our main pc it wouldn't work because the PC only has a CD writer/player not a dvd one (the Office 2007 suite is on dvd I soon realised!).
Is there some way around this? Do I have to install a dvd player/writer (which I'm unlilkley to use much) ? Can I just copy Office 2007 to cd from the DVD( I know it'll take at least a couple of CDdiscs) and copy it across or are there security issues that will prevent that?
It's a genuine copy with key code. Can I somehow use the keycode to download the suite onto the pc? I've been looking at Microsoft's website but have not been able to figure out the answer from any of the pages I've found.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I think its unlikely you will be able to copy the software from DVD to CD, and still expect it to install properly as it was not set up to install from several CDs.
It would be much simpler to buy a DVD drive. I would imagine you can pick one up for next to nothing (< £10)...but you must have quite an old PC for it not to come with a DVD drive? Are you sure it will be able to run this software?Don't pay off your student loan quicker than you have to.0 -
If you have a network (router etc), you could share the drive using file sharing, and attach to the share from the PCEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Not sure why it's on DVD. My Office 2007 Enterprise fits on a CD.0

I agree with Donnie, I downloaded Office 2007 Standard Edition and it fits on a CD for me too! The files on my CD come to 337 Mb, I imagine a friend could copy the contents of your DVD on to a CD for you? But otherwise I would install a DVD writer and then you're covered for the future.0 -
Thanks for suggestions. Sadly it's definitely dvd, dont know why . My PC is about 18 months old and works fine otherwise. I've never needed a dvd drive till now.
Albert Ross I do have a router--how would I go about sharing from the laptop and would I then be able to copy the software to the PC or would I have to have laptop running in order to use Office 2007?
Hope you can help and sorry to be a pain.Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!0 -
If the router is wireless, first of all make sure it is encrypted, otherwise you could end up sharing files with the neighbours.
then, assuming XP, on the laptop, start, help, file sharing, and run the network setup wizard to setup file and print sharing (either from the help link or start, run, then..
rundll32.exe hnetwiz.dll HomeNetWizardRunDll CHM=ntshared.chm FILE=alt_url_windows_component.htm
When complete, in explorer, right click on the DVD drive, sharing, and share that drive.
on the desktop, explorer, tools, map network drive, choose a drive letter, and map to
\\whateverthelaptopiscalled\d
If you have 3rd party firewalls installed, it could get a bit more involved.
if you google "file and print sharing" there are lots of more detailed guides on the subjectEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Completely off-topic, but wouldnt installing it on both the laptop and PC be breaking the licence agreement - i'm assuming it wouldnt come with two different licence keys? (Obviously up to you though if this sort of thing bothers you!)0

Office 2007 Enterprise from the HUP does indeed come on a DVD. My only question is that if the PC doesn't have a DVD Rom of any description, has it got the grunt for this version of Office?
I have just checked, and I'm afraid that the licence is for a single installation - I must admit that I thought that you used to be able to use such programs on up to three PCs in your own home. Could you ask someone else in the NHS who doesn't use a PC at home to get you another copy?

My understanding from wife's literature from work was that it could be installed on home system and laptop within the terms of the licence. To be honest we could probably get by without it as my old Office 2000 suite does most of what we need but we thought we might as well upgrade as there seemed to be an inexpensive option on offer. From what I've seen on the laptop there are fa rmore bells and whistles than we need.
Thanks for all help anyhow.Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!0 -

Nope - although I am sure that used to be the case, the T&Cs on the DVD case now state "You may use one copy of this software on one device within your home".
I think you might struggle to activate it on more than one PC anyway.
