university trying to claim fees

A few months ago I had to suspend my studies from university after a few things happening, including having to change my work pattern which unfortunately clashed with university. My Student loan in Scotland gave me a max of about £60 a month, so I wasn't able just to quit my job. I therefore had to suspend my studies (actually, I was 'withdrawn' for poor attendance by my lecturer by phone and told to 'not bother coming back'). I actually suspended my studies last year too without problem after a good opportunity came up which would help me focus on my career goals.

I have received letters from my university stating I now owe them near £1000. In fact, I've got a few days left before this 'debt' is handed over to the university's debt agency to deal with.

As I said, I had to suspend my studies last year and had no problem. I done so around the same time as this. Now, however, the university are saying they changed their T&Cs for this year and within it states if a student suspends studies after a certain week, half the course fees will be paid (at least I was told this by the office, I can't check since my university login has been blocked too).

I'm not sure of the legality of them doing this - are they allowed? Or is it just scare tactics from them? Thanks for any help

I don't see why they can't do that. It will stop potential timewasters.

Certain University's are making it easier for students to last the year in order to receive the full amount of funding sadly. Some universities scrapping exams in first semester in some courses...

Were you paid any of you loan when you started? If so then yes it will be right you owe them some money.

I completed the first year of my degree and the first 3 months of the second year before deciding it wasn't for me and changing uni.

I will have to pay back one year's loan and the three months of the second year because I received my funding for it, although they have obviously taken into consideration I only did part of a year so it's a reduced amount.

I would have had to pay this back already except I'm back in education part time so it will just be saved until I graduate then I'll pay it back when I'm properly earning.
