Returning faulty goods bought online

I have read the 'Consumer Rights' section but am still unsure as to my position. I purchased a stereo through Amazon as a Christmas present, which has since proven to be very temperamental randomly stopping of its own accord when used. I have contacted the seller who inform me that they will collect and examine it but if they find there isn't a fault I will be charged for the £20 collection (not to mention being left with a faulty stereo).
I want like to know what are my rights? Being skeptical, I would like to know where I stand if they determine there is no fault?
Can I ask for a straight exchange or refund?
Thank you

You can state a preference for the method of resolution but given the length you've had the goods it will be considered as "accepted" and as such it is the retailers choice on how to settle the case.
As the item is under 6 months old it is their obligation to disprove the fault rather than your obligation to prove it. In theory you cannot be left with a faulty item and a £20 bill unless you have caused the fault (eg dropped it etc) as if its faulty and not caused by you then it will be repaired/ replaced/ refunded0
