Altho I personally have not been in your position, can I just give you a word of warning. A few years ago, I had a single parent friend who was desperate to get back to work. She did a job that was exactly 16 hours a week and lost benefits because the Social told her that, in their little world that y'ou should not work more than 16 hours a week' actually means you're only allowed to work 15 hours 59 minutes.

Now this was a couple of years ago, but it might be worth bearing in mind and checking out before you go any further. Or does anyone know any different?

I apologise in advance if this is wrong and don't want to put a dampner on your plans, I wish you all the luck in the world, I just don't want people to fall back in the same boat as my friend.

I would say that would be right if it included a top up of council tax and housing benefit, but as its looks like it dont your tax credits looks too high, does it include child tax credit, working tax credit and childcare ?

You would also be entitled to an 'in work bonus' of £40 per week for 52 weeks and its not mean tested.

Scarlett, I remember us discussing this with others on another thread a while ago.

I went back to work 4 weeks ago ~ at the jobcentre just before I started back at work, I asked about the work bonus and was told it was only for people who were claiming a disability/incapacity benefit of some kind.

Maybe it's different in other areas, but not mine :)

I've just looked at my print out which the job centre give to me to let me see how much better off I would be working. (This was from 5 weeks ago)

WITHOUT my housing ben and CT ben, I get

    Child tax credit ~ £78.26
    Working tax credit ~ £63.49
    Earnings (16 hours @ minimum wage) ~ £85.60
Child Benefit ~ £29.15 (its gone up a £ or so now tho)

    That comes to £256.50

I have 2 children so I guess the calculation you have there is wrong ~ how old are your children?

looks like its different rules for different areas, under mine any lone parent on IS gets it, think astonsmummy gets it also, I dont think it should be selective and all areas should get it, do check though cause you dont want to lose out on 40 smackeroonies :)
