child minder query

I have to employ the services of a child minder for a few days a week.
One thing I am surprised is that they require/expect to be paid for statutory holidays and school holidays, although its 1/ 2 normal rate. Is this the norm for child minders? I am not happy to be paying half rate just to “retain” their services especially during the summer holidays.
Why do thy charge for holidays? Why can’t they just factor in an increase on the normal full time rates.
Interested in hearing other parents and any child minder views out there.

I had a similar query when we were looking for somewhere for our daughter.
I actually asked one childminder. She said 'without being rude, do you get paid for holidays and bank holidays'. Which of course we do.
It's probably easier for us to pay a lower rate all year, and the reduced rate while on holiday than to pay an increased rate through out the year.
It also means the childminder will have a steady stream of income and not have stop start wages.

I don’t get paid holidays or statutory holiday. I only get paid for the hours I do at work.0 -
How can you not get paid for holidays?
Everyone is entitled to paid holiday leave arent they
Not if you are self-employed. Luckily for me I use a nursery which gives me 2 weeks free a year as holiday if my son doesnt attend= and we dont get chrged for bank hols when the nursery is shut either0 -

i use a childminder and to be fair im very lucky i think it depend how they are to be honest. mines is lovely i do have to pay if i go on holiday but she is very feliaxbel which is brill she also picks up and drops him off! you dont get that in a nursry i only pay for the day he goes aswell in theroy she shud charge me a full time place as he goes 4 days a week but the days change so she is unable to take another child on. if he was at a nursey i would have to pay for 5 days. the only problem is if she off ill then ur off too! and thats hapeend onec and no she didnt charge me. my little lad not been to well this wk end n i cudnt go to work n she wont charge for the days ive had off with him either but i always make sure that i give her somthing coze i get tax credits towards my fee that not my monye so i make sure she got that. if you to a local jobcen they shud shud put u intouch with registed minders also i rang up levery one on my sheet n my childminder got reconmended to me 12 times! so that also good if other minders have good praise for the too i hope this helps good luck0

Hi. I am a qualified childminder although not minding at the moment. I was never paid for bank holidays or if I did not have the child due to my circumstances (eg ill or on holiday) I did get paid for holidays taken by the parents or if the child was ill and she stayed at home with him. As I cared for a pre school child, school holidays were not a consideration.
However, I know a lot of other minders. They charge a fee over the holidays to basically hold the place open. If they did not do this, they would not be able to take children of school age as they would not earn enough and would need to take pre school age children to ensure the income.
Remember, most minders charge well below the minimum hourly wage.Member 105 of 1% at a time - 23/100 :j0 -
Why not take your holidays at the same time as the child minder if you do not want to pay?Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

I'm sorry, I don't apologise. That's just the way I am. Homer (Simpson)0
