Tax credit overpayment - please help

HMRC are claiming they have overpaid me £820, I believe they have overpaid me by £410.
I have been writing to them repeatedly since 2nd July 2012 in this regard. My Tax Credit Award for the year dated 22nd June 2012 received by me on the 30th June 2012.
After much to-ing and fro-ing I have today received a letter from HMRC via my MP stating that as I have not informed them in time then the £820 stands regardless.
How can I repay £820 of a £410 overpayment?!?!
I do not know what to do next. I do not want to repay more than I have actually been overpaid but I do not see where I go from here.
This has taken over my life for the past 6 months. I cannot possibly afford to repay £820 full stop. I dont know what I can do
Please please offer me a light at the end of this tunnel
any kind of help would be greatly appreciated
