Just a tip from a veggy: chopped mixed nuts tend to be significantly cheaper than nuts in other forms and I find them fine in muesli, home made burgers, nut roasts or mixed in with spices as a kind of dukkah to dip bread and olive oil in.
Lembas also has a couple of very good asian supermarkets round the corner from it (on main road). I think its called Osmans but you can't miss it as it has a massive bright red sign. Worth a look for cheap sacks of onions, spices, herbal teas and sauces whilst your're in the area Jenny
Ozmens is great - I always go there for nuts. Last time I went it was £4.99 for 1kg of whole almonds and £7.99 for 700g or 800g (can't remember which) of whole cashews. Bargain!0 -
Noticed this too, Sainsburys also put their value price of dried fruit up - so annoying when they do this, they dont add just a few pence either, huge price hike and what are the chances prices go down again later?lilmisskitkat wrote: »I use Asda Smartprice or Tesco value dried mixed fruit for baking - although the price had gone up from 64p to 98p for 500g in the past few weeks

They will but there is no logic to it - you just have to keep an eye out on MySupermarket.com . It means that you end up buying when it is convenient for the supermarket, and not the individual shopper. I only picked up the mincemeat because I happened to fancy making a dry fruit and nut mix, but wasn't prepared to pay that much for value dried fruit. I don't like hoarding more than is required but the fact is I have a storecupboard full of dried foods so I can make what I want, when I want rather than be held to ransom over a price I don't wish to pay.what are the chances prices go down again later?Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

I have found nuts cheaper (esp peanuts, almonds, coconut and cashews) in the asian supermarket - there are some in leeds I can suggest if thats any good for you.People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

We buy unsalted cashews from Tesco in the World Foods aisle £5.99 for a kilo - there are also almonds which are cheaper I think. The price fluctuates quite a bit - we have paid as little as £3.99 for a kilo.
I suspect an Asian supermarket will be a good place for fruit and nuts.0 -
Are you sure? The bags I have seen in my local Tesco and Asda have shrunk from 800g to 750g and now a miserly 700g for cashews.barginunter wrote: »We buy unsalted cashews from Tesco in the World Foods aisle £5.99 for a kilo - there are also almonds which are cheaper I think. Got some great cranberries from the Holland and Barrett website. £7.49 for 500g plus a second packet for a penny. In my local Holland and Barrett store, they did say they'd match website prices but then they said that it was only 300g that was on the 2nd packet for a penny offer. I knew they were wrong so I ordered online. Slightly irritating that the store wasn't aware of its own website's offers but even so, great value!
An update: the Holland and Barrett cranberries arrived and they contain a whopping 70% sugar! It did not state this on the website (though another customer's review had this information but there was nothing from Holland and Barrett themselves that had it!)
If we can get our car out today, we are off to Sheffield to the recommended stores!0 -
Have you tried the Natural Food Store in Headingley, Leeds (on North Lane)? It sells 1kg and 2kg bags of lots of different nuts and dried fruit. I don't know how the prices compare, but you could give them a ring on 0113 2784944 to price up a couple of items for comparison.'It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.'
