Cheap dried fruit and nuts

Where's the best place for dried fruit and nuts?
Supermarkets are SO expensive.
I love making fruit cakes, and my other half makes his own muesli so we go through loads of it.
Any ideas? I heard Julian Graves used to be good but obviously they're out of business now. Tried a market at the weekend and they were advertising really low prices and selling big bulk packs that looked like good value but I worked it out and they weren't! They were just as bad as the supermarket prices.
I'm in West Yorkshire - anyone know anywhere?
I want hazelnuts, cranberries, sultanas, raisins ... the usual stuff!

Asda had a range, think they were just over £1 each, in the baking aisle, definitely had cranberries etc in it, reasonable sized packs for the price.

I find Sainsburys 'value' mixed dried fruit perfectly acceptable though haven't bought any for a few weeks so can't tell you the current price.

Sultanas and raisins should be reasonable in Home Bargains or B&M's if you have access. Lidl and Aldi also worth a look.

https://www.lembas.co.uk has 163 varieties of dried fruit and bulk goes up to about 10kg. They do mail order or you could visit them in Sheffield maybe.

    Great website, thank you!
Lots of it is significantly cheaper. Not everything but enough to make it worthwhile going there!
  • Thanks for reminding me about lembas edwardia, it's only a ten min bus ride from mine! I will treat myself to chocolate brazil nuts this weekend!

Just a tip from a veggy: chopped mixed nuts tend to be significantly cheaper than nuts in other forms and I find them fine in muesli, home made burgers, nut roasts or mixed in with spices as a kind of dukkah to dip bread and olive oil in.

Lembas also has a couple of very good asian supermarkets round the corner from it (on main road). I think its called Osmans but you can't miss it as it has a massive bright red sign. Worth a look for cheap sacks of onions, spices, herbal teas and sauces whilst your're in the area Jenny :)

No good for eating, they also need a bit of a soak before baking for best results.

Unfortunately about the same price as the Big 4 value ranges.

I bought a couple of huge jars of vegan mincemeat from Sainsburys at 17p each on Sunday - exp Nov 14. I intend to turn these into fruit cakes as it's so much cheaper than dried fruit. Look in the baking section, you might be lucky.

  • I use Asda Smartprice or Tesco value dried mixed fruit for baking - although the price had gone up from 64p to 98p for 500g in the past few weeks

Got some great cranberries from the Holland and Barrett website. £7.49 for 500g plus a second packet for a penny. In my local Holland and Barrett store, they did say they'd match website prices but then they said that it was only 300g that was on the 2nd packet for a penny offer. I knew they were wrong so I ordered online. Slightly irritating that the store wasn't aware of its own website's offers but even so, great value!
