We've been relatively lucky this year so far, roads have been relatively ice and snow free. I've been on my road tyres, commuted daily (5 miles) but I've had half a dozen rides out too - beautiful low sun, crisp scenery. Here's a pic of my mate coming up Kirkstone Pass last week. What's not to love about winter cycling!

Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.

Brrrr I haven't cycles since before Christmas. My belly is showing it too!

    Hurry up warm weather!
  • Have been into the office twice this week and cycled the 7 miles is way both times. My route is mainly along residential streets/parks so most of it hasn't been gritted. Been fine though - just have to have your wits about you and be prepared for a few skids/walking the bike if snow too thick/too uphill! Definitely feeling like more of a "work out" but it's absolutely lush out there - even been getting off to look at the ducks, geese and swans in one of the parks :D

Not been cold at all - just been making sure I have plenty of layers and good gloves!

If you're unsure just give it a try :D

  • I've done the 16 mile round trip in London this week, most of the snow is gone now. Tip - drop your tyre pressure to about 40psi if you are cycling over snow, it helps with grip (not sure why).

Anyway, even in a blizzard a cyclist can keep up a steady 5mph without much trouble, which is faster than any other form of transport! Black ice is the only thing I worry about so I tend not to cycle after a snowfall freezes overnight.

  • Anyone cycling on icy roads in this weather is nuts IMO.

I thought I could get away with it and ended up breaking my elbow early in December. There was absolutely no chance whatsoever to 'correct' and I was only traveliing at walking pace as I had noticed the ice.

Please don't do it - if you haven't had an accident yet it is more by luck than judgement.

Although boring - turbo trainer for me until roads improve.

I cycled home last monday along the canal, 25 miles. it was icy and snowy so it was pretty bad but the light was fab. took me 3 hours as my last 4 miles are all uphill.
if you can get through winter summer is really enjoyable on the bike commute!

I'm usually a year round cyclist, but haven't cycled since november due to ill heath.

Typically, just before I was taken unwell I'd purchased a pair of Schwalbe Marathon Winter tyres - ho hum, shall put them in storage until next year.
  • I gave in last week and got back on the bike. Bought some winter gloves, and I'm thinking of getting some shoe covers. This keeping fit isn't very money saving! :D
