Managing company trying to refund deposit to them rather than us?

Hey everyone!

So much useful information on the forum, thanks everyone!

I'm in a situation at the moment where I have given notice to move out. Our flat is managed by a company (who manages a number of properties for the landlord).

I received an e-mail from the Deposit Protection Scheme advising to log in to process the deposit payment.

When logging in, it showed that we'd get £0 back and that the landlord/agent wanted to take our full deposit amount. We've only been in the flat 6 months and it's in the same, if not better condition than when we moved in.

I e-mailed the managing company and they advised that they have instructed the Deposit Protection Scheme to refund the full amount to them (the managing company) and then they will provide the money to us from there.

This doesn't sound right does it? I thought the whole idea of the DPS was so that the money never got passed between parties?

I have to respond to the DPS to say whether I accept or contest the terms.

Would appreciate any advice.

  • Your right to be suspicious - this is not the way the system should work and giving into their request would give complete control to the agent and robs you of the right to go through the disputes process.

    Tell them to sling their hook and contest the terms that they have put forward to DPS
  • It's not right. Contest it. The DPS will then give it direct to you.

    I agree. Contest it and quote what the agent wrote in the email.

    Remember that all the time it is your money until the agent can prove a claim.
    You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'
