FLAC to WMA VBR transcoding...?

Last time I suggested CDex I was told off because it was considered too complicated. It's not, and it will do FLAC>WMA. It's a long time since I set up CDex, but if I remember correctly, you will need to download the FLAC codec and tell CDex where it is located; after that it's as automatic as any other rip or conversion. Just set the WMA encoder in Options|Settings, then select Convert|Re-encode compressed audio files and away you go. On my machine the FLAC>WMA conversion is particularly fast: blink and it's done.0

If you can't get a WMA converter, then TLH (Trader's Little Helper) is a reliable FLAC to mp3 encoder, with a choice of bitrates and choice of CBR or VBR. I use it often. PM me if you have questions about it0

....It's VBR?
Nope. I don't normally use wma, but my understanding is that at comparable bitrate, wma has the edge over mp3. At 96kbps the wma conversion sounds good and is around 2.0-2.5MB for a 3-minute track, or about 30% smaller than a 96/160kbps vbr mp3. How small are you expecting to go?0 -

It's not that I want really small file sizes -- it's more about the sound quality! To my ears WMA VBR (135-215kbps) files sound better than WMA CBRs or MP3s or Oggs at similar file sizes... And sadly, with two 1GB "MP3 players" size does matter!I haven't used Winamp for ages .... but ... if you load the flac file in Winamp, then right click and select "send to" and then select the option "Format converter" you can select the output to be wma (CBR and VBR are both supported)
Aha! That actually works! And it's dead easy! Brilliant!
Thanks everyone for the suggestions :beer:0
