I am having a problem with my Canon Scanner. I have had the scanner for several years with no problems but now I'm getting the following messages & have no idea how to resolve the issue.

"Release the lock switch, detach the USB and reconnect. Scanner will be closed"

then

"Unable to open the TWAIN Source. Please check the connection then restart Toolbox"

I am not aware of any lock switch - since getting the message I've moved the connection to a different socket on the PC & re-tried to no avail. The scanner is only connected by the USB cable taking power from the PC.

I don't understand the second message at all!

My only thought - I've just connected a new printer (with it's own scanner & copier) has it 'bumped' my old scanner? I prefer the old scanner and ideally would like to keep & use both.......Can it be done please?

Thank you for reading and for any help you can offer.

The lock switch holding the carriage assembly is not released properly. Disconnect the USB cable, slide the lock switch on the bottom of the scanner toward the unlock mark and re-connect the USB cable direct to computer.

    if not

Try uninstalling using original cd rom disc "not windows uninstall"
Then install again with original cd rom disc

    Might help? from instructions page
Insert the supplied LiDE 20 CanoScan Setup Utility CD into the computer disc drive. You'll be asked to select the language you prefer. After the language is selected, the CanoScan Setup Utility main menu appears. Use the computer mouse to click the top option from the menu, which is "Install the Software." The install dialog box appears. Click "Start Installation." Follow the onscreen prompts that appear to complete the install. After clicking the final question "Yes," the computer restarts. Remove the CD

Push down the lock switch on the bottom of the LiDE 20 toward the unlocked lock icon to unhinge the scanning mechanism inside the scanner. Lay the scanner down flat with the lid face up.

Insert the square-shaped end of the supplied USB cord into the back of the LiDE 20 and plug the flat end of the cord into an open USB port on your computer.

Lift the lid of the scanner and place a document face down onto the glass. Align the top edge with the mark toward the foot of the scanner and close the lid.

Click "Start," select "Programs," select "ArcSoft PhotoStudio" and "PhotoStudio 5," which is a program included on the Setup Utility CD. PhotoStudio launches. Click "File," select the source, which is listed as "CanoScan LiDE 20" and click "OK."

Click the open scanner icon at the top of the screen. The scanner starts to calibrate. To the right of the scanner screen, select the type of scan you wish to perform. Choose "Photo" for a 300-dpi scan, "Magazine" for a 150-dpi scan, "Newspaper" for a 300-dpi scan or "Document" for a 300 dpi scan. Click the "Preview" button to display a preview image before the actual scan. The preview page allows you to crop the scan before the document is scanned.

Click "Scan" to capture the final scan. Click "File" and "Save As" to select the folder to which you wish to store the scanned file. Enter a file name and choose the file type (Canon recommends JPG) and click "Save."

    Thank you for your help........

I found the locking switch cunningly hidden on the base of the scanner. It was already unlocked but I switched it anyway & tried again - no joy.

Then I searched for the installation disc...........when I eventually found it............... I did as you suggested Hasbeen, uninstalled & reinstalled the software and it's working now THANK YOU very much:j
