Any experts on fridge-freezers?

Hi all, I need a little help with my fridge-freezer - am trying to avoid a call-out / replacement.
My freezer works well, but my fridge doesn't seem to be maintaining a cool temperature. I did a quick google search and one likely answer was that fridges won't work if the chiller element (which operates via the freezer) gets clogged with ice. I defrosted the freezer yesterday, it took ages even with a powerful hairdryer but I did get rid of all the ice, which tbh was chunked solid. Whilst I did clear the visible parts and the vents, the chiller element that runs to the fridge was concealed and I'm not entirely convinced that it was clear of ice, just because it took so long to clear away what I could actually see.
I turned it back on, setting the freezer at a higher temperature to avoid and the fridge on super-chill. The freezer is fine but all but the chiller cabinet of the fridge is actually keeping anything chilled now. It's no big deal atm - just me and luckily v cold outside atm, although the last thing I want to do is attract wildlife by leaving food out on the ledge! - but what I'd like to know is whether there are any MSE / DIY options to explore before I call in the professionals (I'm guessing min £100 callout fee)?
Needless to say it's not under extended warranty
. Can anyone help?

What is the external temperature surrounding the fridge...My stupid fridge turns itself off if the external temperature is under 6 degrees and everything defrosts....there's nothing wrong with it it's just what it does.
£100 callout fee? Replace it..it'll be cheaper. Fridges can be picked up for next to nothing.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

ETA: It's not me, it's the fridge - others have had a similar problem. Perhaps I should consider myself lucky that it's lasted for 4 years.
Others be warned about the Hotpoint FF200E.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!
