standard life shares

i have recently sold my standard life shares that i recieved in 2006 when the company floated.on the day of issue they were worth about 230p i sold them 6 years later for about 320p.As the shares were free do i have to pay any tax on them and if i do is it for the amount they went up(90p) and if i do have to pay tax am i allowed a tax free amount on shares every year
