help no cooker!!!

Options
   my cooker oven part has broken so I still have gas on top. Any ideas what I can make for teas etc.
I have a slow cooker some where, but after my last atempt at doing sausages in it,we put it away cos they were so rubberey, and put us of using it.
Main problem is that I bake cakes for school lunch boxes and for that quick tea of say fish fingers and oven chips or a pizza.
All suggestions welcomed. Many Thanks

Pasta, if you've got two rings you can use. Risotto, anything pan-fried. Soup and crusty bread. Do you have a grill? Howabout making refrigerator bars for school lunches?

    Hi

If you have a non stick frying pan you can shallow fry sausages, fish fingers, eggs, etc and you can make potato cakes in advance (mashed potato shaped into burger shaped and chilled in the fridge until you're ready to fry them instead of chips.
Have you got a microwave? Cos if you have you can start things off in the microwave and then finish off in the frying pan to sped things up.
Also if your family will eat stews they can be made on the stovetop, also mince, mashed potato, veg etc.
Sorry but i don't know about any cakes that can be done on a stovetop but if its possible you're looking in the right place, I'm sure someone else will know.

thanks yes we live off stews, mince etc. we eat quite well but its the tea that I leave in the oven whilst Im bathing the boys that I'll miss, when time is short. Yes I do have a microwave but all Ive used it for was porridge (now do that on the stove) and the odd jacket potato. Maybe I should wipe the dust of it

I've been living without the oven part of my oven for the past two months - a bit annoying, but I have a new kitchen on the way inc oven, so I've been making do.

Big hearty pans of stew are good - you can leave them on low when the boys are in the bath

Soups as well, or pans of chilli.

Pasta is a popular option - quick and easy to make on the hob.

I've also started cooking pork chops in a pan with a lid on, adding a little honey and butter to keep them moist.

Eat boiled new potatoes rather than chips in the oven.

Cakes are less easy - how about doing something like rice crispies in chocolate? Or Choco Cornflake Crunchies?

Finally, as the weather is getting warmer, how about salad/cold dinners? This would be easy and healthy to prepare, and no cooking or washing up pans at the end!

How about welsh cakes or scotch pancakes either on a griddle or a heavy based frying pan on the hob.

Make those chocolate crunchy cornflake thingies for lunchboxes. I'm sure there are other things which are just melted choc to hold the bits together, and some things which are just boiled sugar water holding coconut together, if your mob likes coconut :D

I have a few microwave cake recipes - I will check out some and post later today.

I once moved house and was without a cooker for 3 weeks, survived with a kettle, toaster and microwave. If I'd had a slow cooker as well I'd have been in heaven!!

    Back later! :)

Edited to say that these are old recipes I used when I had a 650Kw microwave, my current one is 850Kw so cooking times wil be less.

    Chocolate Chip Bars
    • 1 cup butter or margarine
    • 1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
    • 2 eggs
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 cup all purpose flour
    • 1 cup quick cooking oatmeal
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1 cup semi sweet chocolate bits
    • 1/4 cup chopped nuts
Put butter in glass micro proof bowl. Cook on HI for 45 seconds to soften. Beat in remaining ingredients except chocolate and nuts. Spread batter in buttered 12 by 8 inch micro proof baking dish.
Sprinkle with chocolate and nuts. Cook on low for 16 to 17 minutes, or until no longer doughy.
Rotate dish once during cooking. Cool and cut into squares
    Yield: 32 bars

    Shortbread

    150g butter, softened
70g caster sugar - plus a little extra for sprinkling over
    200g plain flour, sieved
    35g semolina

Cut a piece of baking paper to fit the microwave turntable (could probably get away with greaseproof?).
Place all of the ingredients into a mixing bowl and combine together until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Knead into a soft dough.
Place the dough on the baking parchment, which has been set on the microwave turntable and shape dough into a 20cm circle.
Pinch around the edges of the circle, mark into 10-12 segments and !!!!! all over with a fork.
Place tray into the microwave oven.
Microwave for 5 - 7 minutes, or until the shortbread is dry to the touch on the top, and just set in the centre. Leave to cool slightly on the turntable.
Remove carefully from the oven, dust with caster sugar and mark into sections. Cool completely before removing from the tray and breaking sections into pieces.

    Queen cakes

    6 oz marg
    6 oz caster sugar
    3 eggs
    6 oz sr flour
    pinch salt
    3 oz currants
    Milk for mixing

Approx 24 paper cases, 6 cups,
place a paper case in each cup before you add the mixture, cook in batches of 6 or 8

Cream butter, add sugar and beat well together till light and fluffy.
Add eggs gradually, beating well after each addition.
Sift four and salt and add currants, fold into creamed mixture.
Mix in sufficient milk to give a soft-dropping consistency.

Place spoonfuls of mixture in paper cases until no more than 2/3 full.

    Cook 2 – 3.5 minutes

You could vary this basic recipe – choc chips instead of currants, or replace some flour with cocoa, or add lemon essence, whatever your family likes.

    HTH ;)

Also edited to say - cant remember where I got these recipes from, sorry, so I cant give credit to originators.
