Who ever would have thought that you could make money from worm drowners!
I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.

I agree it may not be relevant (although there is a difference in LE from type 1 and 2 as you can recover from type 2 due to lifestyle changes or at least go on tablets not injections) as there are new discoveries all the time and I feel it may be 'cured' in our lifetime. And you no longer have to buy an annuity.

No one said to put 100% of long term savings into pensions.

My point is (esp self employed and your business could fail leaving you owning money) that money in a pension is safe- not just from you spending it before 55, but others getting their hands on it as well (ie creditors).

It always is wise to split your assets into not only different classes, but different places/tax wrappers.

A pension will be part of the long term plan, my original question in the thread was regarding a first taste of managing my own investments rather than having my employer do it all for me as happened with the previous pension!

I'd rather learn and make my beginners mistakes with a 50/month commitment to an ISA than a £200/month commitment to a SIPP :)

Most employer pensions have the facility for you to choose the investments within (if they are money purchase).

Nothing to stop you putting 200 a month into that ISA while you're learning, or even 50 a month into a Sipp ;)

It is/was a high street banks final salary scheme. Current transfer out value is £67k but I think it's safer to leave it there and know I have a good chunk of my retirement income already sorted and locked in.

I don't think any of them do any more, it was however my first job out of school, I worked there from 1987 to 1998 and it seems still have quite a lot of protected benefits from that time!!

Just called TD to see how my account was coming on as I hadn't heard anything back from them, to be told my application for a S&S ISA has been declined ??

They also refused to tell me why - Can anyone give me any clues ???
