When our toilet blocked at a previous house, luckily my dad was staying with us (he is a plumber)

Not having his toolkit on him, basically he hammered four reasonably sized nails into one end of a broom handle (the end without the broom on!!) and then wrapped lots of strips of old sheet around this using the nails to wrap it around and help it to stay secure. When the resulting fabric ball had covered the nails and was a little larger than the area in the toilet pan where the water usually comes up to (you know, that squarish bit at the bottom), he just plunged it up and down until the suction and pushing downwards again forced the blockage through.

Or you could use a mop, works for me every time.

In the other half of the "s" bend, the bit you cannot see; there could be a build up of a hard clinker hanging to the inside of the pipe. This occurs in hard water areas or where people have saved money/scarce water with the Californian motto of "If its yellow let it mellow........".

[yes stick your hand in and have a good feel around].

You should still be able to clear the blockage using the methods suggested above. I have also used the hose pipe with a very narrow but powerful jet of water coming out of its restricted end. It gives you your own mains pressure "power jet".

If the blockage has been caused by the "clinkering up" of the inside of the "S" bend. Wait until you will be away for a few days and bail out the water, replacing it with acid. I've used car battery acid (Sulphuric acid) - Try Dyas the ironmongers, tell them why you need it; an alternative is Spirits of Salts (Hydrochloric Acid), this seems to be more widely available but not as good. By the time you get back the "clinker" should be soft and crumbly.

Obviously concentrated acid is dangerous stuff. Use robust double layers of rubber gloves and put down protective newspaper covered with plastic sheeting, wear eye protection. Bale out the water and replace with acid and finally cover the pan with cling film and warning labels.

    On return

Get rid of all the acid, ideally bale it out rather than flush it. Only when it is well washed through can you use your fingers round the bend again!

[I also used a stubby tea spoon to knock the last of the "clinker" off the inside of the "S" bend]
