I do feel very lucky, and both the farm shops I use are family run and have been around for a long time. TBH can't see that the supermarkets have effected them too much as they have alot of loyal customers.

Sometimes if I describe the town and the area we live in it sounds like we live in the 50's rofl, but its really not. Just a small, friendly, northern town.

I have to admit you can rarely shop or go out without bumping into someone you know and apart from the recent bigger supermarkets and an argos there are no other highstreet stores. No costa etc although there is now a mcdonalds - again a recent arrival. Still have a local ironmongery type shop who is great for advice, plus a timber/builders merchants who has been in the area for generations. They reckon the building on a B & Q superstore a town along hasn't effected them as they customers are so loyal and they are still cheaper than the big stores.

We do feel lucky as the schools are all pretty good as well and we can walk out our front door, cut down the "dirt track" footpath to the side and be in open fields/trees/footpaths in seconds, kids love "sandy banks" by the river which is a short walk further on.

Don't get me wrong there is still crime etc like any other town, but levels are low and in general the people are lovely, friendly and chatty.

How lovely! Its crazy to think but honestly that how this town was when I grew up. People never locked their doors, there were a lot of small local producers and a great shop where you could get everything from a light bulb to a camping lamp or cooker. The more 'modern' the town has become the worse its got. It is a commuter town and is like a little London now. The river areas and NT land is still lovely but the town itself is generic, same same. I miss the friendly chat and knowing your neighbour stuff.
