I read recently that the working classes call grandmothers Nan, Nanny or Nana and middle and upper classes call them Grandma or Granny. Just another piece of useless information to keep the debate going! And I'm not bovvered!
Absolute rubbish. My grandparents (the ones that I knew - the paternal ones believed their precious son's story and didn't acknowledge me) couldn't have been more working-class. My grandad had been a farm labourer from the age of 12 until he couldn't work any more. Actually the term 'labourer' is inaccurate because he had a lot of skills, but they're all just written off as 'ag lab' on the census.
Also, I never knew anyone apart from working-class people in the Yorkshire village that I grew up in, and Granny/Grandad were what all the other children called their grandparents. My MIL came from Dartford, and as I said, I'd never heard the term 'Nan' or 'Nana' for grandmother, until she started using it for herself.
My DH called his grandmother 'Bubba'....

My children describe their granies as 'White Granny'and 'Orange Granny' - the colour of their hair.
It's the childrens description - not mine!0 -
This thread just reminded me of my own grandmothers... they were called Nannie Bridge Street or Nanny Ealing.... for the places they lived....
My children called them Nanny and Grandpa
My own grandchildren have always called us Nanny and Grandad but my eldest grandson has recently taken to calling me Grandma not sure what brought that on but it could be cos I am letting my grey hair grow so maybe I look more like a Grandma now...:rotfl:#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

We have grandmas and grandads all round. They are now distinguishable by where they live, but used to be "with the doggies" and "without the doggies". This was sometimes abbreviated to "Grandma and Grandad With / Without". When the doggies died, it became a bit of a mouthful to say "who used to have the doggies", but it wasn't acceptable still to call them "With" because they weren't any more. They have always had cats, but shy cats don't have quite the same impact as barking dogs! :rotfl:FUNNIEST THING OF ALL THOUGH...
IS THAT MY GRANDSON CALLS HIS MUM ........BY HER FIRST NAME !!
SHE HAS ALWAYS INSISTED,
THAT IT WAS BECAUSE HE WAS CALLING HER THE SAME NAME, AS HE HEARD MY SON CALLING HER...:rotfl:

My daughters went through a phase when little of calling anyone of a certain age 'a nan /a mummy'..so we'd be on a bus and she would say, 'that mummy over there has a bag like yours' or 'that nanny has nice shoes'...which was fine except the anyone over 30 was judged as a nanny!

My late Mum was Grannie to her grandchildren. I am Nannyjacks to two of my grandchindren, and Nanny to the other five.My youngest grandson when confronted by his rarely seen 'other grandma' She liked to be called 'Linda', but recently decided that she should be called Nanny was told by Mikey aged three 'Your not Nanny, my Nanny is in 'merica on holiday' .Which I was , my son-in-law tried to pacify his rather irate Mum saying 'well he rarely sees you so he can't be blamed for arguing'. Exit one rather chasend Linda with a noisey sniff!! I see Mikey at least three or four times a week as we live in the same village and he's seen me since he was born.Linda on the other hand comes twenty miles down the road about once every six months when she remembers .You have to work at getting a childs trust and love it's not automatic .She seems to think that a visit once in a blue moon is enough. It's rather sad really as she is missing such a lot . Mikey is the youngest of the tribe of five siblings and they are the lights of my life. I go to all their school plays and meet them from school at times, and play ludo and cardgames with them on Sunday afternoons and am just there for them when they need me .I am a definate 'hands on nanny' and love them all to bits.0

I asked my daughter what she would like my grandaughter to call me, she is my first grandchild but my daughters partners mum's 3rd, her other grandchildren already call her Nan so we decided between us that I would be Granny. My mum has always been 'Granny Janet', I will be granny 'Di'. I don't mind being called Granny, I'm 49 and love being a gran.0
