Free Website

Options
Hi,

I would like to set up a small website for a gardening sideline that I do. Does anyone know if there are any free ones out there other than Google? I don't need to take payments but I will need to add text and images.

Any suggestions,

thanks,

K

wordpress may be a good place to start, if you are happy to put in the work to learn how it works. All you need is good hosting with c-panel (that will normally allow to install wordpress very easily).
WP is very good, you can get very nice templatea without spending a lot of money, which I've used for one of my sites and they look very good

here's an example of business template, that you can personalise very easily (textures, colours, fonts, etc):

These gardening/landscaping templates also look good:

You can also find free templates, put they don't look as good and you may find other sites using them. I think with all the money you save designing your own site with WP, it's worth investing £30-40 to get a good template. Most have good support forum as well, like elegant themes where you get good support as well.

I've tended to use MS Frontpage in the past.

That and a free hosting website, you can find plenty of these through Google usually.

Also you can get .tk and .co.nr domains for free too.

The thing you have to be aware of when using any such sites that are free is that you are not in control of anything, you could spend months putting together a site and getting traffic to it and in five minutes find it deleted for some ToS violation that you weren't even aware of. If you do use such ites then be aware of this, and make sure that you know that if you are hosting a business on one (wordpress.com does not allow affiliate links) then it looks like you cannot even be bothered to get a domain name which are available for a few quid anyway.

If you do get a domain name of your own, your options become much better, you have more power and many more sites that will host you free, for a link to their site of course which gets people in for the premium versions. (and they are a waste of money too)

Noomle.com is a good site anyway which allows text and images and it is free though you get more if you donate $5 every couple of months. It is a good option for when you are starting out and do not know what kind of reception you may get :)

I would def recommend Wordpress. I create sites using Wordpress a lot, once you get used to it, its very easy. Theres lots of very pro looking themes and there is so many plugins (addons) out there to make your site look great. I would recommend using a decent web host, will cost you no more than £15/year, plus your domain name which would be about £10 over 2 years.

Send me a PM if you would like a helping hand setting a Wordpress site up.
  • I use wix.com because it's so easy. I had no clue how to create a website when I started and now i've got 2 on there :j

my first impression is that the websites are the best free ones I've seen, this would even make me consider a free website, as they don't have their name/link in the footer, normally a giveaway that makes you look unprofessional
Before using I would try and find out about the reliability of their servers, and customer service/support, also make sure I own the domain, as having all your eggs in one basket is not good.

just an excuse for advertising a website in the signature, that's been removed by mse, timewasters should be banned
  • I personally use Weebly, they have tonnes of ready made themes, drag and drop function, it's helped me to understand coding too which has been something I wanted to learn for a long time.

Definitely go and have a look and PM me if you need any more advice!
  • I have two sites on Wix I have found them very professional looking and next to none downtime they were easy to set up and maintain :)
