I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!

Onion salt is just onion powder with salt added, so if you do use onion salt, don't add any salt to your recipe. Take a wee tiny bit of the mixture and fry it in the pan and taste it for seasoning before you cook the whole lot.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

I'm pretty sure you can get it in Lidl.0

I think I bought onion granules as I couldn't find the powder as I was worried about onion salt being too salty. They've been fine.0

You can mince or grate a small (peeled) onion, this should roughly equal a teaspoon and a half of onion powder.
Or you can make your own onion powder. HERE

I use dried onion which you can get at pretty much all supermarkets. If I need/want it to be powdered (to make a really smooth sauce) then I just give it a blitz in a spice grinder/blender.0

I've always found that onion powder is much easier to get hold of in oriental or indian style stores rather than supermarkets... The other thing to try would be if you have any kind of indian or oriental stalls at a local market.
We go through a lot of herbs and spices in our house so we tend to buy online once every so often. Let me know if you need the links and I will PM them to you. xcEveryone has a dark side... apparently mine is called Harold?!? :huh:0 -
I made that as well and didn't have onion powder so just added a wee bit of onion
Cooking it tonight so will find out if its worked lol0 -
I used dried onion to begin with - ground it up in pestle&mortar when I could be bothered. Then I found onion granules. I now have half a pack of dried onion that I keep meaning to put in stuff but forget its there :rotfl:
I gave several members of my family the takeaway secret book as a xmas present along with a hamper of the main spices and ingredients. I found onion powder on amazon for them but I'm determined to use up the granules before I switch to powder proper
tbh - it all tastes good no matter what form you get the onion in. OH and I got a kebab from a takeaway when we were away a couple of months ago after making it from the book for about 6 months. We've decided that the book is nothing like a takeaway shop kebab - its WAAAAAAY better. No more tasteless takeaways for us now. Onion powder or no onion powder
