Tax Credits / loss of job Question

Hi

I have tried out all the online calculators, I was just wondering if anyone here could confirm what they say.

Hubby works full time, as do I, and we have always done so .Our joint earnings have always put us well over the TC threshold, so the only benefits we have received is Child Benefit.

It looks as if I will lose my job in the next 6 weeks. I will of course be entitled to £71 per week cont -based JSA, for the (very) short time I hope it will take me to find another job.

ETA - I will not be receiving any redundancy payout

My question is - is there any consideration given to actual money coming in each month, when working out TCs. Based on hubby's wage alone, we would technically be able to get some TC help, however it seems my wage from 2011/12 and 2012/13 means that we are excluded from any award, even though my earnings will be reduced to nil (or JSA if I can / need to claim it).

What I mean is, obviously there will only be his wage coming in, but because I did have a wage, earlier in the tax year, and the tax year before, it appears to mean we won't qualify.

Of course, my intention is to find work right away, my query is "just in case" , I wondered if there was any short term help available for us.

Thanks in advance.

  • To answer your question - No. Tax credits are worked out using tax years income (usually last year, can take this year into account).

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply & confirm this information.

I am sure I will be able to find some kind of job in the next 6 weeks to make up some of the shortfall.
