Can I claim off car insurance for house damage?

A car lost control and ended up damaging my hedge yesterday. I don't really want to involve my house insurance to make a claim. Can I claim off his insurance without going through my house insurance?
Also, what can I claim for? It's a mature hedge, and would probably take 4 years for anything that's planted to reach the same size. About 3 metres of it was completely flattened.

Well you could claim directly but personally, that's what you take out insurance for so I would just leave it to my own insurers.
Things like this can get complicated especially if there is likely to be a dispute about 'cosmetic' damage. Basically a loss adjuster will have to examine the area and it would help if you have any pictures to show the hedge previous to the accident.PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. I remember when we were young a friend went through a hedge after straightening it up the householder said "it's fine" about six months later it was dead.
If it was me I would try and get his insurance details and call/write them yourself in the first instance.0 -
Surely this should be a claim off the car drivers insurance, with the hedge re-planted with "mature" hedging (probably won't be cheap, but far cheaper than if they hit another car)I am a mortgage adviser. You should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Yes you can claim from his insurance. Ideally you'll need three separate quotes. I'm quite sure a landscape gardner will know what you claim for.0 -
I badly damaged a mature hedge with my car a few years ago. My car insurance replaced hedge with a mature planting-the householder bore no cost.HTH xDebt-free...and staying that way...0

Having tugged it around a bit, I think it will probably grow back into shape on it's own, so I probably won't risk jepordising my own premium by making a claim. I wondered if I could claim for the stress and inconvenience of it all; that was much worse than the actual damage.I remember when we were young a friend went through a hedge after straightening it up the householder said "it's fine" about six months later it was dead.
Good point. But I'll take the risk.0 -
