tax disc when selling car?

I have a couple of questions about selling my car. I know I have to fill in the V5, send it off to DVLA, and give part of it to the buyer - but I'm not sure about the tax disc.

The car is being sold WITHOUT a tax disc - so my plan is to send that back to DVLA and get a refund. I've not done this yet.

If the buyer decides to go through with it and goes to the post office to get a tax disc (so he can drive it home) - can he get one whilst mine's still not been cancelled/refunded?

Wouldn't it be simpler for the buyer to just pay you what you'd get as a refund from the DVLA?
  • Yes - but I'm on the start of a 12 month tax disc and he only wants a 6 month!

Also - when selling, do I ask to see that he is insured for the car?

If he wants a test drive yes.

    After he's bought it, no.

Time and accurate date a receipt. two copies, one each.
No insurance = No test drive.

You lose the full month on the tax, so it may be just as well to stretch the buyer over and meet halfway on the other 5 months.
    Be happy...;)

Dont forget, even if he has doc insurance it will only cover a third party if he has an accident on any test drive.

also even if his insurance quotes fully comp it dosen't automatically mean he is insured to drive another vehicle, read the small print
